What a week! I have to say how proud I am of our program and the way we choose to respond to situations that were not ideal. Here is a few stats for you that really surprised me after our two games this week:
- Penalties called against us @ Lone Peak: 8 (they scored many man up goals)
- Penalties called against us @ Skyridge: 14 (twice we were 2 men down)
- Goals for Skyridge while we were man down: 0.
Some highlights this week Include the following:
- Kelston Evaga (#99, Senior) scored his FIRST goal of the year! We expect more, Kelston!
- Dylan Osmond (#2, Freshman) scored his FIRST goal with Westlake Lacrosse! The first of many, Dylan!
- Kelston and Dylan shared a special moment after Dylan's goal.
- Defense shutdown Skyridge Offense on JV and Varsity.
- Offense just keeps better and better every game and we love seeing it!
- We scored 16 goals this week and gave up 13. +3 for the week. We like +++!!
- The boys properly honored Pat Tillman on Thursday, the 17th anniversary of his death, with their gritty, competitive play.
- After this weeks games, we are now sitting #14 in the State per MaxPreps rankings. We are sitting #18 in the State through the RPI, which is the official ranking system for Utah. Teams 1-16 are considered "A-Bracket" teams and that is where we are driven to be. It's where we belong and we are excited to PROVE it these last 2 weeks.
I want to explain the situation involving the Skyridge parents on Thursday during the JV game. It is a region rule that when we play each other in our region (LP, CC, PG, AF and Skyridge) that fans are supposed to sit on opposing sides. This has always been a Region IV rule and the AD for Skyridge should have been informing the parents of this. This is a rule that all visiting teams to Westlake MUST do. I, for one, am grateful our AD enforced it as many Skyridge parents had engaged in hostile behavior within 30 seconds of the JV game starting. The game was stopped until they moved, for which I was grateful because of the things I had heard a few of them and a few of their players on their sideline saying. Had they stayed on our side, that would have reflected on US and that is 100% unacceptable. It also would've escalated significantly during the game. I'm grateful play was stopped and they were required to move. The AD would have been well within his rights to force a forfeiture for Skyridge and the refs SHOULD have thrown multiple conduct penalties on the parents for the conduct and totally unnecessary delay. Should we find ourselves in such a position in the future (I don't think we ever will), I ask that we comply immediately to my requests to move if I ever had to ask. Our AD told their coach to ask them to move and their coach did as requested. Sadly, a few of the Skyridge parents berated their own coach and ignored his request to move, putting him, a first year coach who was hired 2 weeks before the season started, in a very bad situation. He is a really great guy who did not deserve to be ignored and disrespected by some of his parents. I'm grateful we have parents and fans that would comply if I asked and would do so without incident. I'm seriously grateful for that!
Here Is our schedule for week 8. Please note that it IS subject to change, as always, and we will remain flexible and adjust accordingly when needed. We are excited to go to Corner Canyon on Tuesday and PG on Thursday. This week is a week of big games and we can use all the support as possible!
